This guide is focusing on products and general concepts since that's my wheelhouse. There's a ton of other people that can help you out with supplements etc if that's what you want to know.
It's as a google doc so I can add more info as and when. If there's anything specific that you want to be in there, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

For those that have read it, is there any more info that you want to be included before I post it as a thread instead of a google doc?

I'm mid 20s, but I'm not too focused on maxxing- I'm mostly here since I wanted to help where I could with skin and products since it's kind of my job.

I'm a cosmetic chemist. I formulate the products.
Can I ask you something about Retin-a?
I've seen plenty of reviews stating the effects tend to wear off as soon as one stopped using it, thus making retinoids useless in the long term
Whats your take on it?
Btw ty very much for this very useful

Like almost anything, once you stop using it, the effects will eventually wear off- it's just how bodies work. However, I wouldn't say that it means that they're useless. The short answer is that retinoids are some of the best "anti ageing" topicals that we have. You don't need to use a retinoid for anti ageing if you're 16, you just don't.
Read the bit of the guide on retinoids for my full thoughts, but if this is your first foray into retinoids, I wouldn't recommend starting with tretinoin unless you've got acne.

Would there be any adverse effects if I would put topical DHT on my skin with a GSK-3 Inhibitor ? or with SM04554 ?
I truly don't know on that one, sorry.

yeah, the GSK-3 Inhibitor is an approach to stop hairloss and stop the adverse effects of DHT (and other factors)

I would be pleased if you would look into it, because I have a bit of a language barrier and dont understand everything

I will make a thread soon, I will tag you and plead you to help us (and me lol)

Also, you sound like a Redditor

I'll see what I can find, but yes, tag me in the thread :)

I do go on Reddit, but I'm a serial lurker. As a general rule I only post on a site if I feel like I actually have something to offer.

Good stuff.

Do you have much in the way of acne scarring? I bombard my skin with tonnes of stuff but I must have the thickest skin ever cause I don't see much improvement or sensitivity either.

For example I do 50% TCA peels monthly with no issues. I've used full strength prescription retinols daily with no irritation or flaking or anything.

Is my skin just abnormally stubborn?

Quality post, thanks man! I have a few quick questions if you don’t mind.

- Do you have any tips to keeping homemade Vit C Serums stable? (I bought all the supplies already and it seems much more cost effective if it lasts)

- Will use of Retin-A permanently cause skin to become more sensitive to the sun? (Say in my 40s I stop using it, will the sun be more likely to cause damage?)

- How should I incorporate use of a Vit C Serum while using Retin-A & the routine you posted for it? Any issues with them overlapping?

Thanks!

You still don't need it. I tend to say 25ish is generally a good age to start, but if you want to start now then go ahead.

Personally? No, but I do know how to deal with it. What kind of scarring is it? Pitted or just hyperpigentation?
It definitely could just be that you have really resilient skin. If it's at all possible, I'd definitely recommend finding a good esthetician and seeing what they suggest. Good facialists, estheticians, whatever you want to call them are massively underrated.

Make it every time you use it, or at minimum every day. Small batches often.
No, the photosensitivity is an acute issue.
Start just with the Retin A at night, drop the vitamin C until you're comfortable and not feeling quite as sensitive. Then reintroduce the vitamin C on a morning. Don't be surprised if your skin can't take the vitamin C at the same concentration as it did previously, again, start slow and work up.
Surprised you didn't mention Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum with ferulic acid though as it's the best.
Only didn't include it since I've never tried it myself- always meant to and just never gotten around to it.

OP after we spoke yesterday, i made a new routine. Could you point out any flaws with it? Would it be too much (Little)?

Morning
1. Cleanser
2. Niacinamide
3. Vit C serum
4. Squalan
5. Spf

Evening
1. Cleanser
2. AHA
3. HA
4. Retin-A
5. Squalan
Since you've been using Retin A so long, I'd say you should be okay with this much. If you Shift the Niacinamide down to just after the Retin A because of how great it is at helping strengthen the skins moisture barrier. Other than that though, all I can say is introduce the products one at a time in case they don't agree with your skin so you can figure out which one it is more easily. If possible leave 2 weeks between starting each new product.

One thing I am not sure about is using a retinol based night cream in conjunction with tretinoin cream. I normally apply my retin-a, wait 30 minutes and apply my normal night cream. I am now considering getting skinceuticals 0.5 retinol night cream. Can I still do the same routine?

Are you using the tretinoin every night? If so then you don't need the added retinol. If you're only using tretinoin every other night but want to consistently have some form of retinoid on your skin on the off nights, then go for it.

I use the tretinoin 3-4 times a week, 0.025 strength. Do you think I can use the skinceuticals retinol nightcream on the other nights? Since my skin is already used to retinols, can I start with the 1%?

I don't like to be reliant on a million different chemicals like some kind of senior on permanent life support in a hospital.

Using only compounds is much more elegant, have any routine that is simple?

The skinceuticals 1% does not fuck about. Especially considering that you're using it in conjunction with tretinoin, I'd start at the 0.5%. But yes, use it on the nights you're not using tretinoin.

Bro what do you think that the food you eat and the water you drink are made of? You're already "reliant on a million different chemicals", it's called being alive.

What kind of night cream do you recommend? I use an Olay one which isn't bad but I am looking at one containing hydroxy acid.
Alpha or beta hydroxy acids? And for me, moisturisers aren't where you should be focusing on trying to cram actives in- do that with serums.

"A synergistic blend of naturally derived acids – malic, lactic, tartaric, citric, glycolic – helps remove dead skin cells through gentle exfoliation"

I think this would be too much to mix as I already use hyaluronic acid, Sal. Acid, adapalene (in my effezel gel with benz peroxide) and retin-a.

Maybe for a night cream its better to focus on an ultra hydrating cream.

Okay, all of those are alpha hydroxy acids which would exfoliate.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, salicylic acid is an exfoliant and then you've got the retinoids. Short answer is yes, it would be a better idea to focus on hydration if you're throwing the salicylic and retinoids (and benzoyl peroxide) at your skin.

Benignice, firstly thanks for these very useful informations ! I'd like to know what you think of blackhead vacuums to get rid of blackheads. I'm half black and I have plenty of them on my nose. Is it a bad product ? Do you think the skincare routine in itself (I plan to get every extra you recommend) is enough to get rid of all of them ? And since I'm half black, do you think SPF 25 is enough for me for the summer (and even each season) ?

Firstly, are they blackheads or just sebaceous filaments? If they're just sebaceous filaments, they'll fill right back in within a couple of days.
As far as the machines go, the at home versions in my experience aren't very effective (but please don't use pore strips, those are awful for your skin).
A BHA will likely help you.
No, SPF 25 is not enough for you in the summer. I don't care if you're a Fitzpatrick VI- your skin is still damaged by UV.
